MPR fact checks Michele Bachmann

A rare event happened in Minnesota journalism happened today.  A media institution actually fact-checked Michele Bachmann.  The only place to have ever done it before is WCCO's Reality Check (and they've done it on several occasions).

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hosted a private fundraiser last night for Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and the Minnesota Republican Party.

Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president in 2008, also attracted thousands to an afternoon campaign rally that featured several speakers. We looked at some of the statements made by those speakers, as well as DFLers who held their own rally earlier in the day, to test their accuracy.
(MPR)

At this point, I am unable to ascertain why MPR performed actual journalistic analysis concerning Michele Bachmann, but it is definitely welcome.  What's interesting is that while Tom Scheck states that the DFLers stretched the truth, he does note that Bachmann was simply factually wrong.

Let me help, Tom:  She lied.  She lies all the time.  I've organized all of her lies here.

You can watch and judge for yourselves after the fold.

You failed to mention that in the same article you quote and link to, there is a fact checking of the DFL rally as well.

What was I thinking? You wouldn't want to highlight the part that says

"DEMOCRATS STRETCHED THE TRUTH TOO"

because that doesn't fit the meme of your post.

Dave ... where have ya been? (0.00 / 0)
Tool,

Boy-o we've missed ya.  The place has hardly been the same without you toolin' around.  You betcha.

Big difference between stretching the truth and just makin' **** up.  "Journalists" always find false equivalencies to make up for the fact that Republicans like Bachmann lie so frequently it's hard to keep track of them all.  Though I do try.

How's that Palin-Bachmann 2012 ticket workin' out for ya?

Dave is right... (0.00 / 0)
...the very same article noted that noted that a claim by Dem pol Betty McCollum was "only partially true." McCollum claimed that the Dem health bill--

The MPR fact check found that Obama's new laws "would prohibit insurance companies from penalizing women when setting health insurance premium costs for businesses that employ fewer than 100 people." In fact, the private sector will be will be able to continue the practice for companies with more than 100 workers.

So McCollum got it wrong; clearly more regulation of private sector insurers is needed to prevent discrimination against women. (But it is beyond me why commenter Dave Thul, no fan of liberalism, would want to point out more federal government measures and regulation are needed. That would not seem to "fit his meme," but thanks for calling our attention to it.)

Now it's time for us all to get out the "Lies and BS Meter" and see which of the two political parties scored higher for "Lies and BS," here. Okay, we feed in McCollum's statement--hmm, not much of a score there, looks it qualifies as "merely getting a fact wrong..."

Now let's feed in the Republican statements in the same article... I'm putting in Bachmann's state that the US government now owns fifty-one per cent of the private sector...whoops, that sent the meter's needle right into the red, "absolute lie" zone...

Let's see, now I'll feed in her "attempt to deceive the audience into thinking that Obama administrations was giving terrorists more rights than the Bush administration"... whoops, there goes that needle again, right into the "deliberate attempt to deceive" end of the meter... (you can see the way this is going, no what your "meme" is, you can see that Bachmann's lies already trump McCollum's misinformation on the "Lies and BS Meter," but let's keep going just to get Dave Thul back to reality...)

Here, I'll feed in Palin and Paulsen's claim that "the health care reform law is "a government takeover of health care," when in fact anyone telling the truth knows that "under the new law, a majority of Americans would continue to get health coverage from private insurance companies, which is paid for by individuals and businesses."

Oh boy, the Lies and BS meter really didn't like that one. It's displaying a little graphic of a pig with flies swarming around it, and the pig's holding its nose and pointing to the Palin/Paulsen lie. Usually only Bachmann triggers a response like that. (And of course, the Betty McCollum gaffe about women's health coverage doesn't even register by comparison, it's now buried under three major lies by three different GOP speakers at the same political event...

Adjust your memes according, those who can, and put on your hazmat suits and rubber boots, because even though they've already won by miles, the Republicans have more lies, they always do...strap on your gas masks, we're going in again, very same article, still more GOP s**t to see here...

...because Bachmann's first lie (about 51% of the private sector now taken over by the government) DEPENDS ON the big lie told by Palin and Paulsen (the "health care reform law is a goverment takeover of health care.") That's DOUBLE BS by Bachmann, building a new lie on the back of an even bigger one, that's double toxicity! There's STEAM shooting out of the Lies and BS Meter now, the dials are spinning around tops, springs are popping, the warning lights are flashing "TOO MUCH GOP! TOO MUCH GOP!"

I've got one more thing to feed in here--it's Bachmann's name, and reputation for veracity and character--(CROWD: Don't do it, Bill! Don't do it! It won't hold together, the whole thing will blow like a g*****m volcano!") But I say, I gotta do it--you folks clear out of here, it's fact checking, I've got to put Bachmann's reputation for telling the truth into the Lies and BS Meter, otherwise it's not real fact checking--the rest of you folks run for your lives!

CROWD: (running) God bless you, Bill!

BILL: Tell my mother I love her! (Cough, cough,) My God, the stench of this processed Republican conservative BS, shooting out the pipes, burning out of control--how did MN conservatives ever learn to breathe this stuff, day in, day out--(cough, cough) G*****t, if they can do it, so can I, if it means getting Bachmann's name into the Lies and BS Detector--there it goes, it's hard to feed it in, in this atmosphere of flaming GOP horses**t, mixed in with the steady fumes of conservative lying bulls**t...(gags) It's taking the name! The Lies and BS detector kept spitting it out, but now it's...taking it...bit by bit... it's in!
(BA-BOOM! BA-BOOM!)
Oh, sweet Jesus! The Lies and BS detector is going radio-active! My God, what have I done? The Politifact files on Bachmann lies are spilling over the top of the smokestacks--they're going to hit the crackpot conspiracy theory core! Watch out, the whole thing's gonna blow! Evacuate! A-WOOOGAH, AWOOOGAH!

How's your meme, Dave?

"What was I thinking?" (0.00 / 0)
Well, dave - as usual, you weren't.

No surprise there!!!

Here's the cut 'n paste, from MPR:

Republicans weren't the only ones who made some mistakes at campaign rallies on Wedneday.

Several hundred union members and Democrats attended a counter-rally at the State Capitol. The event featured Democratic Reps. Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum. While Republicans criticized the health bill, McCollum was quick to praise it.

"Our vote, my vote, was to end existing conditions that are allowed by the insurance companies to just kick people off, to rescind their unemployment, to discriminate against pre-existing conditions and to end gender discrimination against women once and for all," she said.

However, the National Organization for Women and the National Woman's Law Center both say McCollum's statement is only partially true.

The federal law would prohibit insurance companies from penalizing women when setting health insurance premium costs for businesses that employ fewer than 100 people. Insurance companies would be able to continue the practice for companies with more than 100 workers.

And as far as stopping health insurance companies from denying coverage to anyone with pre-existing conditions, that won't take effect until 2014. HMOs can't deny coverage for children with pre-existing conditions after September of this year.

Everybody catch that?  Dave?  Did ya?

Here it again, with emphasis:

However, the National Organization for Women and the National Woman's Law Center both say McCollum's statement is only partially true.

Now, compare that to this:

One of the most popular talking points at the rally was this one from Palin and Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen: "A government takeover of health care..."

But that talking point isn't correct. In fact, under the new health care law, a majority of Americans would continue to get health coverage from private insurance companies that is paid for by individuals and businesses.

Everybody catch that?  Dave?  Did ya?

Here it again, with emphasis:

But that talking point isn't correct.

If anyone would care to explain the difference to Dave, knock yourself out.  Personally, I don't think he'll ever get it....even though Bachmann is ZERO for NINE on claims checked by Politifact.com.

And it's interesting Dave didn't comment on this post....

Dave, could you please.... (0.00 / 0)
Could you please address the content of this post directly? What are your thoughts on the lack of honesty and integrity of Bachmann and Palin?
Thanks,
Alec
