Strib falls again, this time on face

Get some decent headline writers, Star-Tribune:
Prof who ousted Ciresi eyes Franken

Tall and lean at 57, with a shock of snowy hair and a manner both passionate and professorial, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer calls himself the insurgent in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race.

Ah, a puff piece on the guy who's running against Al Franken for the DFL endorsement.  Look, I respect what JNP is doing, and will no doubt get several comments from Pallmeyer boosters (Hi Charley) on this post.  And Pallmeyer has made a better effort in this race than Ciresi did -- namely, he has actually defined himself positively instead of telling delegates constantly only that he is not Al Franken.

But to say that Pallmeyer "ousted" Ciresi from the race is just downright disingenuous.  Ciresi himself and Franken did that well enough on their own.

Again, I have deep respect for what Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer has accomplished for his issues and for his supporters.  But there's very little chance at this point of Jack actually winning the DFL endorsement.  The Star-Tribune, which claims to be the leading newspaper in the Twin Cities traditional media, needs to step up and actually analyze the situation in this race instead of sitting back, taking a few quotes from Pallmeyer and his field organizer (who's a good guy, by the way), and just telling the story of a day at a local convention.

Alternately, they can let the blogs do their job for them.  We're happy to step into the gap.  Now, about that advertising revenue...

I'll post some analysis on that SurveyUSA poll later in the day, once I've had a chance to look at the cross-tabs.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
I had similar thoughts when I read the strib.  I have been very disappointed with their local caucus coverage (or lack of).

While I agree in general (0.00 / 0)
I notice that you were not outraged when Franken was getting the unfair advantage and when the name Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer was not even mentioned. So gosh, forgive me if I see your outrage as being more partisan than anything else.

I appreciate your reasoning, GK (0.00 / 0)
But it's not a partisan issue.  When the Strib was covering Franken exclusively, there was nothing for them to cover -- all they knew was that there was this guy Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer running for the endorsement.  Now that they actually have numbers to crunch, they fall down and do a puff piece with a terrible headline instead of actually analyzing the race and giving readers insight into what's really going on.

The same can be said of the recent headline "Ciresi in parting:  Choose wisely."  Ciresi said nothing of the sort, and it's a disservice to Strib readers, of which there are still many, to offer up lame "he-said-she-said" journalism with bad headlines and pass it off as a fulfillment of the role of the press.

Hi back at you, Joe (0.00 / 0)
Joe, I hate to tell you this, but Dave Letterman is having Jack on his show this Thursday.  I just thought I had better tell you since you seemed upset about the Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer piece in the Strib this morning.  I am just a bit worried about your blood pressure, so I thought you might want to take some pro-active measures before then.  Meds or meditation, it is always wise to be prepared.

(Actually, Letterman is doing no such thing.  It was just an interesting thought to present to someone who is so upset about some belated publicity for Jack.)

Let me repeat the sentiment behind my previous comment (0.00 / 0)
Charley,

My goal here is not to come off as upset that Jack is getting some media attention.  Far from it. What I'm looking for is a media organism that is willing to dig deeper than "he said/she said" journalism and actually do a bit of footwork to figure out what the real state of the race is.  Human interest pieces are great, but when it comes to politics some numbers and real analysis would be nice to see from the "leading" newspaper in the Twin Cities.
