Madia's note to delegates

by: Joe Bodell

Mon Apr 14, 2008 at 16:30:00 PM CDT

As noted in several places recently, one of Ash Madia's first tasks as the DFL-endorsed candidate in the Third-district race is to unite the party's activist base behind him -- to that end, he wrote a quick message to convention delegates today in which he praised Terri Bonoff and Jim Hovland and started layout out the rhetoric that will communicate the vision thing to Third district voters from now until November.
In the coming days and weeks, I will work very hard to unite our party and spread our optimistic vision for the future of our country across the 3rd District. By uniting as Democrats, we can win in November, and, more importantly, usher in a new form of patriotism that calls on all Americans to be a part of the solution.

Joe Bodell :: Madia's note to delegates
SUBJECT: Coming Together to Win in November

Dear Fellow DFLers,

I am so proud to be a Democrat today!

Over the last few months, you have demonstrated to everyone the very best our party has to offer. From record-breaking caucus turnout to the spirited race for the congressional endorsement, we have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that the DFL is positioned to win in November.

I am humbled and honored by the trust you have placed in me. As our party's endorsed candidate, I promise that I will spend everyday of this campaign, and my time in Congress, fighting for real solutions to the challenges facing our country. By coming together as Democrats and Americans, we can bring the sad and cynical brand of do-nothing Washington politics to an end once and for all.

Our party wouldn't be in this position today if it weren't for the work of dedicated public servants like State Sen. Terri Bonoff and Mayor Jim Hovland. They ran courageous campaigns and did a great job talking about the issues that will affect our country's future. They deserve all the credit in the world for everything they've done to build the DFL here in the 3rd Congressional District.

I'm so glad Sen. Bonoff will continue representing our interests at the State Capitol. As a member of the Education Committee, she's been a great champion for students, parents and teachers throughout Minnesota. We're very fortunate that we can count on Terri to stand up against short-sighted education funding bills that short-change our future; she's leading the charge for the kind of world-class schools our state will need to be successful in the 21st century.

Mayor Hovland has served Edina and the metro area well. He's been a long-time leader on transportation issues and as a congressional candidate wasn't afraid to take a bold and progressive position on health care. Edina is lucky to have him as he continues to use his knowledge and expertise to help extend the reach of our party.

In the coming days and weeks, I will work very hard to unite our party and spread our optimistic vision for the future of our country across the 3rd District. By uniting as Democrats, we can win in November, and, more importantly, usher in a new form of patriotism that calls on all Americans to be a part of the solution.

By standing together, we can bring the Iraq War to a responsible end.

By standing together, we can deliver health care to every man, woman and child in America.

By standing together, we can combat global warming, put Americans to work in green-collar jobs and balance the federal budget.

By standing together, we can restore the civil liberties that so many have sacrificed so much for.

And by standing together, we can do more than just win this election-we can help our great nation live up to its ideals again.

This is our time to lead. Let's make the most of it because there's nothing we can't do if we stand together.

Sincerely,
J. Ashwin Madia

Terri's Thank You to Supporters (0.00 / 0)
Thank you so much for your support during the course of this campaign.  Saturday, April 12th, I conceded the DFL endorsement to Ashwin Madia after a spirited eight-ballot deadlock.  I am blessed to have had the support of hundreds of volunteers on convention day as well as the thousands throughout this campaign who gave me this chance.

Over the course of this campaign, I have learned a lot about the people of this district, their values, their beliefs and the kind of change they want to see in Washington. None of what they want is outlandish or unreasonable, what they want is simple - a leader who will listen, stand up for their convictions and do the hard work necessary to actually get something done in Congress. The people of this district are tired of typical Washington politics that's made up of partisan bickering and political games. They want change and a leader who is committed to bringing that change to Washington as their representative.

I want to congratulate Ashwin Madia, his staff and incredible supporters for their efforts in this hard-fought campaign. Running in this race has been a privilege, one that I am truly grateful to have had. Now, though, is the time to turn our focus to November and doing the necessary work it will take to beat Erik Paulsen and elect the first Democrat to Congress from the 3rd in 50 years.

As we work together this Fall, I ask that we remember the principles we all hold dear - that health care be a right for all our citizens, that we have a responsibility to protect our planet and address global warming for the crisis it is, that we do the work needed to restore our economy, that we make education a top priority in this country, and finally, we bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq and end this war.

Now is the time.  It is time for us to take back the third district seat in Washington.  Now is the time for us to stand united as Democrats and begin the battle ahead so that we win in November.  Now is the time to lead America back to prosperity.

I ran for Congress because I have a vision for a new kind of leadership both at home and abroad; where partnership is possible and partisanship gives way to visionary compromise.  I promise to use your past support to fuel my leadership efforts in the Minnesota State Senate.  I am honored to continue serving my district and the people of Minnesota -my campaign staff joins me in sending you our heartfelt thanks.  We will be forever grateful.

Sincerely,

Terri Bonoff
