MOA execs beg for money from state

Mall of America executives, planning a $2 billion expansion of the mall, are continuing to press for nearly $400 million in state subsidies. Mall officials warn that the mall has "no chance of being built" if the subsidies are not given. If they have such a crummy business plan, maybe they just shouldn't bother.

The mall is a business, not a public service. Here's the way business works: you invest your own money, and then you expect that revenues will allow you to make that money back, plus a profit. Is the mall not making big enough profits? If not, why expand at all?

There's simply no good reason for them to be getting public funding. This is not like subsidizing some non-profit to rehabilitate a blighted area or clean up the environment. Heck, the new stores in the mall won't even provide living-wage jobs! I don't understand what possible argument there could be for diverting nearly $400 million from our schools, our lakes, and our infrastructure to build an even bigger megamall.

What really kills me is that MOA fatcats seem to have already won this debate. The legislature is not debating over whether the mall should be subsidized; they're debating over whether it should be subsidized by the State or by the city of Bloomington. Well, I've got a different perspective: if you can't do it on your own, try a different business plan!

I understand why the MN legislature wants to spend buckets of money on construction projects.  While the "economic stimulus" doesn't stimulate more than the Chinese economy and while the "gas tax vacation" won't even get most people a tankful (unless you are an oil baron), construction projects just make sense as a way to jolt the economy in the short term.

But why give all that cash to a couple of Canadian billionaires?  Investing in a bunch of retail stores at the beginning of a recession (or a depression, depending) is really a stupid idea for even private investors.  But with all the huge cutbacks in public services, why are we even considering dumping all that money into a tiny, foreign-owned part of the private sector?

Wouldn't it be smarter to make zero-interest loans to homeowners to retrofit their houses for more energy efficiency?  Or maybe to put photovoltaic panels on top of every public building in the state?  Or pump some seed money into U of M research facilities that would create the next generation of battery?  Or build the light-rail between Mpls and St Paul, or rail service to Duluth.  Or to co-generate by using the methane or heat produced at every single sewage treatment plant or feedlot in the state?  Or just fix the damned potholes or bridges or even the Department of Transportation building?

We have a bazillion different ways that we could spend public money, create immediate jobs, and have longterm public benefit to the good citizens of Minnesota.  Wouldn't that be a better idea than giving public money to billionaires named Ghermezian or Wilf or Pollad?
