The Swanson-Hatch Matter

Did anyone really expect anything else?

I'm not talking about the nitty-gritty details of whatever's going on in the Minnesota Attorney General's office.  But did anyone really expect that former AG Mike Hatch's presence wouldn't cause trouble in an office now occupied by his Solicitor General and hand-picked successor?

Here's to hoping Hatch's departure allows Lori Swanson to get down to business in the role to which, in fairness, she is still new.  She's a qualified attorney, but Minnesota voted for her, not for Mike Hatch.  Transition work between the election and her swearing-in is one thing, but it's well past time to admit that keeping Hatch in that office in any capacity was a rather egregious mistake.

Long-time readers may read this as a dose of sour-grapery, perhaps a double-dose depending on how one looks at it.  I beg to differ.  I voted for Swanson for Attorney General because she's qualified and hey, her opponent was Jeff Johnson.  I voted for Hatch because, at least marginally so, he was a better choice than the Acme Auto-Veto 3000.  It's a shame that in the aftermath of a campaign he somehow found a way to lose, Hatch still appears to be screwing things up for what should be a very successful DFL team at the Capitol.

The sunset's that way, Mr. Hatch.  Time to mount up.

Lori Swanson made a very bad mistake hiring Hatch - and now it's up to her to prove that she can stand on her own as AG.

Sad to see him go (4.00 / 1)
While I think it's good that Hatch is leaving Swanson's employ, I'm sad to see him go. Few have done as much as Hatch over the last decade for people who can't fight big interests on their own. It's sad that his career in government appears to have ended in such a crappy way. He deserved much, much better.

Who says it's over? (0.00 / 0)
You think Mike Hatch can give up on politics?  I doubt it.

And yeah, Swanson probably shouldn't have hired him... with a Republican target on his back it was just one flare of temper or inconsiderate remark from disaster.  But I do appreciate the work Mike Hatch has done for this state and I think he would have made a good governor.

Defeating Norm Coleman and choosing a Democratic successor to Bush are worthy goals, but let's focus on what's really important: Sending Michele Bachmann back to the private sector!

I hope it's not (0.00 / 0)
I hope Hatch's political career isn't over.

Aside from the race I worked on, I had the most emotional energy invested in Wetterling-Bachmann, Hatch-Pawlenty and Jim Webb-George Allen in my native Virginia.

Hatch would've been a great governor just as he was a great AG.
