Jackie Bateman: One of Heroes in the Background

by: Grace Kelly

Thu Jan 22, 2009 at 14:12:50 PM CST

Just before the governor's race picks up, I am trying to sneak in a few more interviews. In a campaign role, I have asked for votes or for volunteers, yet rarely do I have the courage to ask for money. So I have real respect for fundraisers. It it the hard skilled work of campaign fundraisers who make most of the campaign possible. This is especially important in a state wide race where expensive advertising is key. Jackie is one of the people making DFL campaigns successful, an everyday hero working for the common good:

1) So give us an idea of who you are and describe the fundraising and other political work that you do?

I'm the person on the campaign who raises the money so that the rest of the campaign will have the funds and resources they need to get the votes, do the TV ads, or recruit the volunteers.  I help to recruit donors to the campaign, and plan/orchestrate events, rallies etc.

I am very proud to have worked on the Franken campaign this cycle and on Congressman Tim Walz's the last.  Both were fantastic campaigns with more amazing candidates and I have been very fortunate to work on both and send two great people to Washington.

Feingold: 'progressive' means clean, ethical, fiscally responsible government

by: Joe Bodell

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) was briefly seen as a potential presidential candidate. But after the Democratic electoral tsunami of 2006, he decided instead to stay out of the race and put his new Progressive Patriots Fund to work helping to elect progressive Democrats across the country.

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.)On Sunday he appeared at events in Minnesota to do just that, helping rally support DFL candidates Al Franken and Ashwin Madia. Earlier this year Madia and Franken won online grassroots votes for the PPF's support, showing a great deal of online organization and a national profile for their campaigns.

I spoke with Feingold outside the annual Vento Spaghetti Dinner in a brief exclusive interview. He declared succinctly (for all the worried readers out there) that Barack Obama is going to win the presidential race (MP3 audio):

We can't be overconfident, we have to be very focused, but things really couldn't be better...the timing of this whole financial disaster has gotten people to get away from thinking about personality stuff and trivia and they're thinking about the bottom line. So that puts the wind at our back in terms of the fact that people are focusing on the hardships that they're going through and they're asking themselves which candidate is likely to address the hardships that people are going through. There's really no serious contest on that.
